Energy management research with home assistant

Two weeks ago we did that State of the open house. It included a presentation by Prof. Michael Kane and Maharsi Pathak from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University.

They presented their research on reducing network requirements by lowering thermostat temperatures. They want to find out when and why a reduced temperature is too uncomfortable, tenants thermally frustrated and the reduction reversed.

With Home Assistant, we want every home to be round Privacy, choice and durability and so we developed Home Assistant. Since we believe in the choice, all data is accessible in Home Assistant and our platform can be expanded or built on.

This architecture enabled Prof. Kane to create a custom version of Home Assistant for his research that collects data about all devices, polls users based on device changes, and exports all of that data back to their research lab. They do this by using device integrations, adding a custom survey feature to the user interface, and push notifications from the Home Assistant companion app to draw the user’s attention to the surveys.

But what I’m particularly happy about is that her research is focused on energy management at home. We added this feature to Home Assistant in 2020 since our way to tackle the climate crisis. It makes me proud to see that we can help researchers in their work, and we hope to see more of it. We also look forward to working with Prof. Kane to use his research to improve the Home Assistant.
