Gasoline heads may be interested in new CNC machined carbon fiber pens, aptly referred to as the Piston Pens from MechatronCNC based in the United Kingdom. For the past 10 years the company has built machines and its experience in building machine parts has grown. Now at Kickstarter, Brandon Richards has developed a line of carbon fiber pegs with engine cylinder stands in the shape of 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder V6, V8, V10, V12 engines. For the interesting project, there are now special price early bird commitments from around US $ 38 or US $ 28 (depending on current exchange rates).

“The idea arose out of a love for CNC machining. As a petrolhead, it was obvious that I needed to bring these two interests together. The overall design is an exploded view of a highly tuned racing engine with the pistons exploded through the head. This fictional creative vision is a beautiful display item and functional desk tool. I originally designed piston pins to challenge my design and machining skills. Throughout the project I learned how to design for manufacture with my own equipment that I built. Knowing my skills, I designed the engine block in such a way that I could achieve good results without any problems and consistently. 3D modeling CAD / CAM was critical to project success and allowed me to verify functionality before making the real components. If Piston Pens’ crowdfunding campaign successfully meets its required commitment target and production progresses smoothly, it is expected to ship worldwide sometime in November 2022.

“After processing, each part is washed and deburred. The next step was to test the assembly, which fitted together as expected thanks to the 3D modeling I did earlier in the process. The picture below shows a cylinder head after 26 machining operations with multiple tools and jig configurations to realign the part. “
