Huawei releases the P50 Pro and Pocket outside of China, but not in the US

Huawei should start selling P50 Pro and foldable P50 bag Smartphones announced outside of China last year. The flagship Pro costs 1,199 euros, the P50 Pocket from 1,299 euros. These convert to around $1,353 and $1,466 respectively, but don’t expect to get your hands on these in the US.

Along with preventing easy sales of Huawei devices in the US, sanctions imposed by the country mean that the P50 Pro and P50 Pocket do not ship with Google apps and services, like Gmail, Chrome, Maps and the Play Store. And this despite the fact that Huawei bases its HarmonyOS on it an open source version of Android.

Sanctions also prevent Huawei from sourcing 5G components, making the P50 Pro and P50 Pocket 4G phones. These are significant compromises that could make the P50 Pro and P50 Pocket hard to sell, as they’re likely to be more expensive than the flagship devices from Apple, Samsung and Google in many markets. The next Galaxy S devices are just around the corner also.

The P50 Pro features a 6.6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2700 x 1228 and a refresh rate of 120Hz, along with support for 1.07 billion colors. There are four cameras on the back: a 50 MP True Chroma main camera, a 40 MP mono camera, a 64 MP telephoto camera, and a 13 MP ultrawide camera. There’s also a 13 MP selfie camera.

The 4,369 mAh battery supports up to 66W fast wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The P50 Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The P50 Pocket, on the other hand, has a foldable clamshell design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip devices. When unfolded, users can access the 6.9-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2700 x 1228 and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, along with support for 1.07 billion colors and a wide P3 color gamut.

On the rear is a 10.7 MP selfie camera and a triple camera array. In addition to the 40 MP True Chroma main sensor, there is a 32 MP ultra-spectrum camera and a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle lens. An interesting feature in the Mirror app allows users to visualize their sunscreen application and look for spots they may not have covered.

Below the camera array is a small, circular display that can show things like notifications and the weather. It allows you to control features like music playback and the cameras. The foldable is also equipped with up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. The 4000mAh battery supports 40W charging.

The two handsets both run on the Snapdragon 888 4G chipset. They will be offered for sale as part of the first phase of an international launch in “key markets” in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Huawei hasn’t revealed the specific markets or the exact timing when the phones will be available for purchase.
