Essential kitchen gadgets and utensils every new cook should own

If you are just starting out on your culinary adventure or are relatively new to cooking, moving from your family home to your first apartment or college dorm, this short list of essential kitchen gadgets and utensils for your first kitchen will help you cook in your favorite Food with ease wherever you are and no matter how big or small your first kitchen is.

Many of the “essential” items you’ll use in your kitchen will depend on the food you love to cook and the skills you’re picking up quickly, but this guide should provide a starter kit of kitchen tools and essentials , to get you up and running. But I am sure that as time goes on you will collect many more tools and machines to help you with cooking.

Essential kitchen utensils

First, let’s start with the essential kitchen items you’ll need to prepare even the simplest food for cooking. First, buy a decent kitchen knife or, if your budget allows, a selection of knives in different sizes to get you started. If you can start with a medium sized chef’s knife and maybe a smaller sharp knife to help you prepare trickier food. A sharpener to keep your knives in tip-top condition is also preferable, but not necessarily one of the first things you need.

Also, remember that as a student moving from one place to another, your best bet is to only buy one versatile knife that can handle a variety of different cooking tasks. Instead of a heavy kitchen block equipped with different sized sharpeners and knives that might prevent you from being a true nomad and that has to be constantly moved from one place to another.

A small paring knife for peeling and chopping is my favorite knife, as is a strong, sturdy, and sharp bread knife, which is essential for slicing those front door wedges for sandwiches.

Once you have yours knife sorted, you might consider buying a decent peeler to do a variety of tasks, including the obvious vegetable peeling, which can be done with a sharp knife but is much quicker with a peeler. However, if you have a smaller knife, it can come in handy for peeling and save pennies in your budget for another, more essential kitchen utensil to get you started. However, if like me you eat a lot vegetables, I find a peeler almost invaluable when preparing stews, soups and broths due to the amount of vegetables I eat on a daily basis. They really make peeling carrots and potatoes a breeze.

kitchenknife

If you’re new to a knife and concerned about cutting your fingers while preparing food, it may be worth considering knives with ceramic safety blades. We have already presented some of them here on Geeky Gadgets. The award-winning design team at Slice, for example, offers a wide range of different kitchen and workshop knives that are worth exploring.

Another essential tool when baking and preparing a variety of dishes is a rolling pin, which is perfect for pastries and other flour-based recipes. They can be made of wood or silicone-style plastic. However, I have used a jar or jar to roll out dough for small baked treats like jam tarts.

Don’t forget how versatile and useful your simple knives, forks and spoons can be. These don’t have to be expensive, and you don’t need a fancy set that’s instantly good enough for dinner parties. Some companies sell each item individually so you can build a set. A good stainless steel item can last a lifetime. The humble fork can also be used to whisk an egg or two for your quick scrambled breakfast or snack. While your dessert spoon can come in handy when measuring ingredients like oils.

Of course, plates, bowls and side plates should not be missing. There are so many choices to buy these days, from fine bone china to plastic and everything in between. A complete table service can be set up in no time at all if you opt for something simple in white, for example. Plates and bowls can be used as serving dishes, mixing bowls, or for storing and covering leftovers in the fridge.

Measures and timers

A measuring cup is another must-have to buy if you don’t already have one, along with a simple scale that allows you to easily weigh out the ingredients required for cooking. If you have a phone, a kitchen timer isn’t essential, but it can prevent your phone from getting covered in flour and other ingredients while cooking.

Kitchen helpers for your new kitchen

mixing bowls

A good set of mixing bowls is also essential and some can even double as measuring bowls, eliminating the need to buy a separate measuring cup or bowl. Make sure they’re microwavable, but overall the material depends on your preference. However, if you are traveling plastic may be a better fit than glass due to the added weight and breakage that can occur with the former material.

cutting boards

Another must-have kitchen accessory to pair with your new kitchen knife is a quality chopping board or chopping board set, depending on what you’re going to be preparing. Because don’t forget that you should use different cutting boards for different foods such as meat, fish and vegetables to avoid cross-contamination. I personally prefer a wooden chopping board that can be maintained with a little oil, but again that is up to your preference and plastic, glass or wood are all available at affordable prices. Consider where you store these items as they are often large.

indispensable kitchen helpers

wooden spoon and spatula

You won’t break the bank by buying a wooden spoon or two. With these versatile, affordable and handy utensils, you won’t burn your fingers on metal cutlery when preparing and stirring your hot dishes such as soups and sauces. They wash well and are not likely to break easily. A wooden spatula will help you turn your fried food over to achieve the perfect fried.

roasting or oven tray

You may not want to cook or bake as often, but I think the baking sheet is invaluable. I use it everyday for everything from cooking oven chips to roasting veggies to using it as a tray to hold ready meals to reheat in the oven. You can buy a variety of sizes to meet your needs. My choice is the largest size, which means I can toss whatever I want to bake in the oven on a sheet pan, which makes my life easier. They’re easy to wash, keep out of sight in the oven, and can take a beating or two.

Grater, colander or colander

For example, consider a strong grater if you like grated cheese in foods. However, they are difficult to store when space is at a premium. If you’ve invested in a vegetable peeler, this can double up for slicing cheese into thin strips.

I couldn’t live without a colander or colander for draining potatoes or veggies before pureeing or serving. A good strong metal would be my style of choice as I’ve had so many mishaps that thin plastic bottles tipped over and my precious veggies spilled down the sink! They can be stacked easily when stored under bowls or pans and are easy to transport.

kitchen pans

Pots, Woks & Pans

Finally, you need a decent pot, frying pan, wok or steamer to cook your prepared food. Again, this depends on your preferences and your preferred food and cooking style. For example, if you like fresh vegetables cooked quickly, then a wok might be a good choice and can be used for a variety of different cooking techniques. Saucepans are great for boiling, stewing and, depending on their size, preparing larger meals that may need to simmer for long periods of time and need a lid to retain moisture. A non-stick frying pan, as always, makes a great addition to any kitchen and will help you quickly prepare a variety of dishes. Care should be taken with non-stick coating as the coating may peel off if you use metal utensils to stir, for example.
